Aaron Rodgers is still a member of the Green Bay Packers, but that likely won't be the case for much longer.
Rodgers made it clear last month during an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" that he plans to play for the New York Jets in 2023.
The Packers plan to oblige Rodgers' trade request, but they're not in a hurry to complete a deal with the Jets.
Green Bay wants to make sure they get an excellent return for the future Hall of Fame quarterback that was the face of the franchise for the last decade and a half.
The Jets, meanwhile, aren't in a hurry to meet the Packers' asking price. It's essentially a bit of a chess match between the two teams at the moment.
Still, the deal is expected to get done at some point this offseason.
And on Monday, longtime NFL insider/reporter Peter King pointed out a potentially important date in the Rodgers trade talks.
King suggested that April 28 — the second day of the 2023 NFL Draft — could be a date to watch for a trade to go down between Green Bay and New York.
His reasoning revolves around two key second-round picks the Jets have that Green Bay likely wants included in any deal for Rodgers.
From NBC Sports: I think the over/under date for the Aaron Rodgers trade is early evening April 28. That’s when the second round of the NFL Draft begins. That’s when the first of likely two or three draft choices to be exchanged would happen. The Jets have the 11th and 12th picks in round two, 42nd and 43rd overall, and I’d bet one of those picks will be the key to this trade getting done. Since Rodgers would be unlikely to be at the dawn of the Jets offseason program April 17, the big date is the 28th because that’s when it’s most realistic the first draft choice would be exchanged between the teams. Rodgers would be at the mandatory minicamp from June 13 to 15, and probably at some of the OTA offseason workouts between May 22 and June 9.
It would be surprising if either team waited until after the draft to get a deal done. The Packers will want to reap some of the rewards of trading Rodgers as quickly as possible. If they wait until after the draft, it pushes almost all of those rewards to 2024.
Similarly, the Jets likely want to know what their future looks like before making their draft selections. That will be hard to do if Rodgers isn't on the roster.
King knows the landscape of the NFL as well as anyone. He's likely spot-on with his thoughts on the timing of the Rodgers to New York deal.
