The biggest questions of the Green Bay Packers offseason is if, how, when and for how much the team will extend quarterback Jordan Love. The if seems to be an easy answer. According to NFL Network's insider Ian Rapoport, the team management is willing to find a long-term agreement.
"The Packers are expected to be willing to discuss a new, fair-market deal for Love that pays him like a true starter."
General manager Brian Gutekunst had already mentioned his desire to find a long-term agreement between the parties.
"I think we will go down that road," Gutekunst said during his end-of-season press conference. "Certainly, I think that'll be important for our football team to have some stability there. Jordan and his representation, they're really good people, so we will start working towards that some time in the next couple months."
When
Now, it's a matter of when it will happen. Last offseason, the Packers gave Love a one-year extension to replace his fifth-year option in a way that made the contract more flexible for the team — and with more upside for the quarterback.
But with that deal done, another extension with a pay raise couldn't be done in 12 months. Green Bay announced the deal on May 3, so a new deal can't be executed before that. According to Ian Rapoport, the deal is expected to be signed right before the start of training camp.
"QB deals often happen in June or before the start of training camp, and that timeline makes sense. Still just 25 years old, Love is now in line for the first big-time payday of his career."
How much
The expectation around the league is that Jordan Love's deal will be between $44 million and $52 million per year. The structure of the deal is also a big question mark — will it be a standard four-year extension like the Packers have done with other franchise building blocks, or could it be a longer deal to give them more future flexibility like the Kansas City Chiefs got with Patrick Mahomes and the Buffalo Bills have with Josh Allen?
"Jordan had a really good season toward the end, especially the second half," Gutekunst added. "And we are really excited to build around him."
Jordan Love is slated to make $11 million in 2024, with a $12.757 million cap hit. Last year's extension gives the Packers more flexibility and some leverage to build a good structure, even though Love is (fairly) expected to get a big-time contract.
Love had an up and down start, but from week 9 on, he was one of the best quarterbacks in football. His stats in that period included the highest PFF grade, second in touchdown passes, second in passing yards, third in passer rating, second in adjusted EPA/play, and first in completion percentage over expected.
