The Green Bay Packers have been dormant so far this offseason. With the team ironing out the final details of an Aaron Rodgers trade, the Packers will need to spice things up as the draft draws nearer.

Quarterback Jordan Love is expected to enter the 2023 as the Packers’ starter. With an experienced quarterback like Love, assembling a capable cast of pass catchers should be at the top of Green Bay’s to-do list.

Departures such as Allen Lazard (Jets), Robert Tonyan Bears) and Randall Cobb (UFA), have put the Packers in a precarious place. However, The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman believes GM Brian Gutekunst will address the team’s need with its No. 18 overall pick.

Here’s who Feldman has heading to Green Bay in his pre-draft mock draft.

Michael Mayer – Notre Dame

From Feldman: If the Pack want to give Jordan Love as much chance as possible to hit the ground running, upgrading at tight end will go a long way. The hunch here is they go for Mayer, at 6 feet 4 1/2, 249 pounds, over Utah’s Dalton Kincaid, because Mayer is the more complete player. He gets picked over Georgia’s freaky Darnell Washington because he’s more polished and consistent. Mayer caught 67 passes for 809 yards and nine TDs for an Irish team lacking in playmakers outside and with underwhelming QB play. Mayer isn’t as dynamic as Kincaid athletically, but he ran a solid 4.7 40.

Love is going to need a safety valve in his first full season as the starter. While Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs can create separation on the outside, Mayer would serve as an ideal red zone target.

Mayer is a jump-ball weapon and has significant after-the-catch potential to go along with it. The Packers should do Love a favor and make life easier on the quarterback by selecting one of the draft’s most dynamic weapons.
