The Green Bay Packers are facing numerous difficult decisions in the 2023 offseason. That being said, the Packers can’t overlook one of the team’s unheralded heroes from the 2022 squad.
No return specialist had a more effective season than Nixon did in 2022. One of the select few game-changing returners, Nixon created major value for himself. He led the NFL in kickoff return yardage, averaging 28.8 yards per return, and took one kick 105 yards to the house.
Nixon, set to turn 26 years old this offseason, is an unrestricted free agent. In a recent article released by NFL.com, Nixon is listed as a player the Packers must keep from testing the waters in free agency.
"The top-ranked return specialist of the 2022 campaign by Next Gen Stats, Nixon was a revelation for the Packers over the last half of the regular season. The former undrafted free agent, in town on a one-year deal, gained a league-high +214 kick-return yards over expected and was named a first-team All-Pro in his first year as a starting returner. Nixon turned the much-maligned Green Bay special teams unit from a weakness into a strength. The ability to provide favorable field position for the offense could prove to be even more critical in 2023 for a Packers team whose quarterback situation remains decidedly in flux."
Return On Investment
Nixon did plenty to increase his market value but, as a return specialist, he won’t break the bank for Green Bay. He has the ability to flip a game on its head and makes the defense defend every blade of grass when he gets his hands on the football.
There are certainly bigger fish to fry in Green Bay, but re-signing Nixon could be one of the most cost-efficient signings the Packers will make this offseason.
