This is certainly not the most important stat you will read about today. Yet, it perfectly encapsulates how good of a head coach Matt LaFleur is, and how his message resonates throughout the locker room.
Every Saturday, the NFL announces fines, and around 1% of the plays each week result in punishment for players. So far this year, there have been 358 fines amongst the 32 teams.
But guess what, the Packers are the team with the least amount of fines in 2024. There have been only three of them, and the most expensive one has been rescinded after appeal.
Running back Josh Jacobs was fined $45,020 in Week 3, against the Tennessee Titans, because of unnecessary roughness (use of the helmet), but that punishment was lifted.
Therefore, the only real fines were for cornerback Jaire Alexander (unnecessary roughness – facemask – $11,255 – week 6) and tight end Ben Sims (unnecessary roughness – leg whip – $5,083 – week 7). The Packers have gone through six consecutive games without a single fine.
Message
In Week 4, Matt LaFleur had an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the loss to the Minnesota Vikings. After the game, he owned the mistake. And his type of message is what ultimately makes the roster feel compelled to follow the rules.
"There were a lot of critical mistakes that we made, not all obviously by the players. I'm absolutely embarrassed by that unsportsmanlike," LaFleur said after that game. "You expect composure from your team and then you're doing that, that's a bad look. So, I think we all can be better, myself at the forefront of that. This is a humbling league at times, and credit to them, they did more than we did to win the game, and we gotta bounce back from it, gotta learn from it and get better."
While Packers players have only been fined three times, and one of them was rescinded, no other team in the league has had fewer than six fines. The New Orleans Saints, whom the Packers face on Monday night, lead the NFL with 18 total fines. The New York Jets had the most expensive fines, reaching $206k, according to the research our colleague Mike Payton did this week.
Fines
To protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity, the NFL and NFL Players Association have agreed on a set of game-related rules violations that may result in accountability measures.
Players are notified of violations and may appeal any ruling. Cases are heard by appeals officers and former NFL players, Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, Kevin Mawae, or Jordy Nelson, who are jointly appointed and paid by the NFL/NFLPA. The decisions made are final and binding.
The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game.
