If you think the Green Bay Packers were done taking offensive players, check this one out. After selecting wide receiver Matthew Golden in the first round and offensive lineman Anthony Belton in the second, general manager Brian Gutekunst attacked the receiver position once again, drafting TCU's Savion Williams with the 87th overall pick.

He's a big, physical playmaker. During the NFL Network broadcast, draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah compared him to early career Deebo Samuel, in the sense that a playcaller must find ways to put the ball in his hands and he will deliver.

Savion Williams Scouting Report

Savion Williams, wide receiver, TCU

Age
(Birthday): 23 (11/22/2001)

A to Z Sports Expected Draft Position: 87

Pre-Draft Round Projection: 3

Once viewed as the next great wide receiver for the Horned Frogs, Williams' career was marred by inconsistency. There were flashes, but some wondered if he would begin realizing his wildly athletic potential. During his final season in 2024, TCU finally utilized Williams in a variety of different ways.

He was used as a standard wide receiver all different pre-snap alignments, a running back, and wildcat quarterback. Some NFL teams now have Williams graded as a running back, so he could take a path similar to what we saw from Cordarrelle Patterson at the NFL level. Williams is a big and physical athlete that brings a ton of versatility to the table. Yes, he is an imperfect player, but one you that just need to get the football into his hands and let him work.

Career Projection: Eventual Good Starter

Why the Packers picked him

The Packers took Matthew Golden in the first round, but that didn’t mean they were done adding pieces to the wide receiver room. After breaking the 23-year streak earlier in the draft, it was still plausible for Green Bay to add pieces to the roster because, going into the process, only Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks were under contract beyond 2025.

If the team will potentially lose Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs in free agency next offseason (plus Mecole Hardman, while Malik Heath and Bo Melton are restricted free agents too), it makes sense to add volume with players under contract through 2028. It’s a similar process to what the Packers had in 2022, adding Watson, Doubs, and Samori Toure.

But more than that, Savion Williams adds an element that the offense didn't have. Head coach Matt LaFleur loves versatility, and Williams gives the coaching staff the possibility of adding creative ideas to the gameplan.
