Packers HC has blunt, yet accurate, answer for cutting player on his birthday

Everyone knows how cutthroat the NFL is – as a game and a business. On Friday, the Green Bay Packers made an intense move when they released three-year veteran Jonathan Garvin on his birthday.
It stung even more as the move came three hours after the team's social media account wished Garvin a happy birthday. It's obviously a very unfortunate development for the former 2020 draft pick that missed just about all of OTAs and minicamp.
Much like Friday's roster move, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur reminded everyone of the harsh reality that is the NFL after he was asked about Garvin's release.
"Unfortunately, sometimes it's time to move on," LaFleur told reporters Saturday. "I understand the timing wasn't great in terms of it being his birthday. But, you guys know – this business never stops."
LaFleur is 100% correct. The bottom of the roster is always churning and the team is always looking out for what's best in terms of what it's looking for and what it's trying to add. Garvin was part of a crowded EDGE/OLB room that not only just drafted another talented player in the first round, but, has strong optimism that Rashan Gary could return before the season starts. With Garvin being absent during the offseason, it made sense to go ahead and let him go so he can try and get into camp with another team as quickly as possible.
It's ruthless and unfortunate, but that's how the machine ultimately works. The bright side is the fact that while yes, it was on Garvin's birthday – at least it's only a few training camp practices in. Now, he has a lot more time to get acclimated with his new team and that'll give him a much better shot at making a roster somewhere as opposed to getting cut on August 29.
