The Green Bay Packers have a tough decision regarding Jaire Alexander. But it's becoming more and more clear that the parties will go in different directions next season. According to ESPN beat writer Rob Demovsky, the Packers are frustrated with the sequence of injuries Alexander has had over the last few years.
"There are strong indications that Alexander's time with the Packers will end without him playing another down. Multiple team sources have privately expressed their frustration with Alexander's inability to stay healthy and/or play through injuries."
Jaire Alexander missed 34 of the last 68 games because of multiple injuries—shoulder, knee, groin. In 2023, he also missed one game because of a team-imposed suspension. The player himself has said that he doesn't know if he will be in Green Bay next season. Publicly, the Packers didn't commit to any decision.
Final call
The Packers don't have a trigger date on Jaire Alexander's contract. So while the team could want to make a decision as soon as possible, there isn't any type of roster bonus forcing the Packers to trade or release Alexander in March.
That means Green Bay can simply keep the former All-Pro player on the roster entering the new league year and through Week 1 in September, waiting to see if there's a team willing to acquire the defensive back.
However, Jaire is generating a $24.956 million cap hit in 2025. If the Packers cut or trade him, the move would create $6.8 million in cap space. There could still be a post-June 1st designation, and in this case the Packers would create $17 million of extra space in 2025, but the amount would only appear on the sheet in June, and Green Bay would have $10.2 million in dead money to handle in 2026.
It seems like the Packers are close to a final decision. It's more when and how, and not if Jaire Alexander's stint in Green Bay will be over.
