When Josh Jacobs left the New York Giants game on Sunday with a knee injury, it was impossible not to be concerned. Based on how head coach Matt LaFleur likes to build his offense through the running game, and how the offensive line has struggled to run block, Jacobs’ potential absence could be a major concern.

However, the starting running back doesn’t have any type of structural damage in his knee. Jacobs didn’t practice on Wednesday, but he has a shot at playing against the Minnesota Vikings.

“Well, he will not practice [on Wednesday],” LaFleur revealed. “So, the plan is to try to get him healthy enough to go and it’s just going to be a day-by-day thing. He is truly day-to-day and we’ll see how he progresses as the week unfolds.”

Solid replacement plan

Against the Giants, backup running back Emanuel Wilson was effective to replace Jacobs. While Chris Brooks offers excellent pass protection, Wilson has developed into a viable alternative to run the ball and get more than what the line gives him.

“Ben [Sirmans, running backs coach] does a great job with those guys, but it speaks to his development,” LaFleur said. “I can tell you his rookie year, it was non-stop. I was always in his ear, kind of getting on him pretty good, but it’s a credit to him in regards to being able to take the coaching and just show up with a sense of urgency every day. There was a lot to learn coming from where he came from to where he is now, but I think he’s embraced that. He’s embraced the challenge and then he’s maximized his opportunities.”

In addition to Wilson and Brooks, the Packers also have Pierre Strong Jr. on the practice squad.

Jayden Reed not ready yet

While wide receiver Jayden Reed is getting closer, the Packers haven’t opened his 21-day practice window just yet. He broke his collarbone in Week 2.

“As soon as medical clears him, then he’ll be out there,” LaFleur added. “I know he’s excited to get back, as am I.”

Reed is already eligible to return from injured reserve, and the Packers can open his window and activate him at any point, including ahead of the Vikings game on Sunday. However, that seems unlikely at the moment.
