It has been a rough rookie season for third-round running back MarShawn Lloyd. He was designated to return from injured reserve on Wednesday and practiced on back-to-back days. However, an emergency situation happened on Friday, and it doesn’t seem like he will be able to play on Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Lloyd woke up on Friday morning with appendicitis.

“He felt some pain in his abdomen this morning,” head coach Matt LaFleur revealed after practice. “Not sure if he's had surgery.”

Lloyd’s first season in the NFL has been full of injuries. He had a hamstring issue in the preseason, making him miss training camp time and the regular season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil. Then, he injured his ankle in Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts, which sidelined him for the last seven games.

Now, he is in the 21-day window to practice returning from IR. The Packers can activate him at any point in this window — and if they don’t, Lloyd would be out for the season.

Despite the challenges, LaFleur still believes the rookie will be a contributor to the Packers.

“He'll rebound,” LaFleur added. “I'm confident in that. But it's a shame.”

MarShawn Lloyd has played only one NFL game so far. Against the Colts, he had six carries for 15 yards and a reception for three yards. He was on the field for 10 offensive snaps.

Now, the Packers have Josh Jacobs, Emanuel Wilson, and Chris Brooks at running back on the 53-man roster. Ellis Merriweather is the option on the practice squad.
