There's a lot in store for the Green Bay Packers' 2023 draft class, as well as their undrafted free agents, so it's always nice to hear that veterans are helping the youngsters.
Fortunately, that's the exact situation for second-round pick Luke Musgrave and the veteran tight ends on the roster.
"We have two tight ends that are vets that are kind of helping us through," Musgrave told reporters Friday.
Musgrave didn't specify which players he was talking about. The Packers, however, have only two tight ends with playing experience on the roster: Josiah Deguara and Tyler Davis. So, it's likely those are the two players Musgrave is referring to.
Either way, it's encouraging to hear Musgrave say that. Especially when considering what the Packers' other rookie tight end, Tucker Kraft, said one the first day of minicamp.
"It's coming at ya fast, learning this whole thing," said Kraft. "We've gotten through one install, but I can see here shortly it's going to be like drinking water out of a fire hose. It's a fun process.
It's also important because, while there is no definite statistic to prove that having a veteran mentor helps rookies develop, there is plenty of history that shows rookie tight ends tend to struggle upon entering the NFL: The only rookie tight ends to get north of 48 catches in a season, in this century. are Jeremy Shockey, Dustin Keller, John Carlson, Jermaine Gresham and Tim Wright.
No matter how you slice it, there's nothing but positivity to glean from Musgrave's comment.
