The Green Bay Packers will be without their starting running back once again versus the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night. Head coach Matt LaFleur has ruled out Aaron Jones for the game because of the MCL sprain he suffered against the Los Angeles Chargers two weeks ago — Jones also missed the Detroit Lions game.
It will be Jones second consecutive missed game, but also the fifth he will have missed this season. Before the knee issue, Jones had had a hamstring injury in week 1 against the Chicago Bears, missing three of the following four games.
Because of these two injuries, Aaron Jones has had only 66 running attempts this season, with 245 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Running back depth
Without Jones, AJ Dillon will be the primary back. The good news is that, despite being limited throughout the week because of a groin issue, Dillon is off the injury report and good to go.
The Packers also have Patrick Taylor on the 53-man roster, plus James Robinson and rookie Ellis Merriweather on the practice squad — the Packers have until Saturday to elevate them or not for gameday.
Offensive concerns
Beyond Aaron Jones being out, there are more potential problems for the offense. Rookie wide receivers Jayden Reed (chest) and Dontayvion Wicks (knee) are both questionable to play. Wicks cleared concussion protocol, but it's also handling a knee injury.
For Reed, the situation seems to be better. He said there's no aggravation after last week's game, so the expectation is he will be good to go on Sunday.
Tight end Josiah Deguara (hip), who missed last week's game, is also questionable.
Defensive question marks
The Packers still might not have cornerback Eric Stokes (hamstring), who's on injured reserve. He's been designated to return, but is listed as doubtful to play on Sunday. No player listed as doubtful for the Packers has played this year.
Cornerbacks Jaire Alexander (shoulder) and Robert Rochell (calf), linebacker De'Vondre Campbell (neck), plus safeties Rudy Ford (biceps/groin) and Darnell Savage (calf) are all questionable to play. Savage is still on IR, so the Packers would have to activate him by Saturday for him to play — the Packers have two open roster spots to do so.
From the players listed on the injury report during the week, defensive tackle Kenny Clark (shoulder), running back AJ Dillon (groin), edge defender Rashan Gary (shoulder), cornerback Keisean Nixon (wrist), and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt (heel) are all off of it and will be available to play on Sunday.
