Latest NFL development creates a risky, but intriguing opportunity for the Packers to solve their biggest roster issue
The Cowboys have waived veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs, and the Packers should consider him.
The Green Bay Packers badly need cornerbacks — especially with Nate Hobbs and Kamal Hadden suffering injuries against the Baltimore Ravens. Suddenly, an intriguing proposition arrived, and the Packers could explore it over the next few days.
The Dallas Cowboys waived veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs, a first-team All-Pro in 2021 and Pro Bowler in 2021 and 2022.
How the process works now
Even though Trevon Diggs is a vested veteran, he will go though waivers after being cut because the trade deadline has already passed. Right now, the Packers have the 21st priority on the waiver claim order.
However, any claiming team would absorb $472K, the proration of his base salary, plus $58,823 if he is active this week. It’s too expensive for just one regular season game, but the playoff run would happen without any additional cost — postseason additional salaries are paid by the league.
Under his current contract, Diggs is slated to make $15.5 million in 2026, $20.5 million in 2027, and $21 million in 2028, but none of it is guaranteed beyond this season.
Most likely, Trevon Diggs will clear waivers and become a street free agent. In that scenario, he would be a much more realistic option for the Packers — including the possibility of signing him to the practice squad, then eventually elevating him for gameday. Each player has up to three elevations per year, plus the playoffs, so the Packers could call him up for all the remaining games. Green Bay would likely have competition to sign him to the practice squad, but it has a great situation to offer — obvious playing time opportunity and the chance to compete in the playoffs.
Diggs told NFL Network reporter Jane Slater that “he is healthy and motivated as he looks to join another team looking for another piece to add this postseason.”
Right now, the Packers only have Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine as healthy cornerbacks on the roster. Bo Melton is a converted cornerback too, but he’s played exclusively on offense and special teams this year. Additionally, safety Javon Bullard is the starting nickel.
Trevon Diggs had two good seasons in 2021 and 2022. But months after signing his extension with the Cowboys, the cornerback tore his ACL and has not been the same. This year, he’s had an average 62.4 PFF coverage grade on 424 defensive snaps.
