The Green Bay Packers held their rookie minicamp at the end of last week. Beyond integrating the draft picks and undrafted signees, it's also an opportunity to try out more players and keep their pro scouting updated. The results seem to have gone well.
Right after the activity, the Packers are reportedly signing three players, including a veteran.
According to Bill Huber, from Sports Illustrated, Green Bay will sign guard Lecitus Smith, who's been in the NFL since 2022. Smith was a sixth round pick by the Arizona Cardinals and spent his rookie season with the team. Last year, he spent time on the practice squad with the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles. The offensive lineman is 25 and came out of Virginia Tech.
Experience across the o-line
Lecitus Smith is the second veteran offensive lineman the Packers have added over the last couple of weeks. Right before the draft, the team had signed former first-round pick Andre Dillard, who was a starting left tackle for the Tennessee Titans in 2023.
Receiving help
The Packers hadn't drafted or signed any rookie wide receiver, but that changed over the weekend. General manager Brian Gutekunst decided to sign two rookie receivers after minicamp — Dimitri Stanley, from Iowa State, and Julian Hicks, from Albany. Tom Silverstein, from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reported the signings.
Dimitri Stanley had 15 receptions for 139 yards in his last college season. He actually played better a year before — a recent common theme for Gutekunst —, with 33 receptions for 420 yards and a touchdown in 2022. He is the son of Walter Stanley, who played for the Packers between 1985 and 1988.
Impressive résumé
Hicks was a much more productive college receiver for Albany. He finished up his NCAA career with 136 catches for 1,722 yards and 23 touchdowns over five years, including 50 receptions for 834 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2023.
Last season, Julian Hicks had 16.4 yards per catch, 11th in the entire FCS, and was fifth in average depth of target. He has a 9.18 Relative Athletic Score, an important trend for the Packers' front office.
Roster limit
Right now, even before these signings are official, the Packers roster has 91 players — 90 regular spots and Kenneth Odumegwu, who has a roster exemption for being part of the International Pathway Program.
Therefore, in order to sign Lecitus Smith, Dimitri Stanley, and Julian Hicks, Gutekunst will have to correspondingly release three players.
