The Green Bay Packers and the New York Jets agreed in principle to swap out Aaron Rodgers for some draft picks on Monday and the Packers' haul turned out to be a bit more than expected.
The Packers received the Jets' 13th overall pick, their 42nd overall pick in the second round and the 207th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, plus, a conditional 2024 second-rounder that turns into a first-rounder if Rodgers plays at least 65% of offensive snaps in 2023.
The Jets received Rodgers, the Packers' 15th overall pick the first round and the 170th overall pick in the sixth round of the this year's draft.
So, let's take a look at the Packers' draft picks as they head into draft weekend:
- Round 1, No. 13 overall (from NYJ)
- Round 2, No. 42 overall (from NYJ via CLE)
- Round 2, No. 45 overall
- Round 3, No. 78 overall
- Round 4, No. 116 overall
- Round 5, No. 149 overall
- Round 6, No. 207 overall (from NYJ)
- Round 7, No. 232 overall
- Round 7, No. 235 overall (from LAR)
- Round 7, No. 242 overall (from JAX)
- Round 7, No. 256 overall (compensatory)
In all, the Packers have 11 picks. you can almost guarantee they're going to try and package at least one seventh-rounder with their fourth-, fifth-, or sixth-rounder in order to move at some point. Teams definitely want to take as many swings as possible in the later rounds, but four seventh-rounders is a bit excessive and they can be utilized in a more efficient fashion.
It'll be really interesting to see what the Packers do in Rounds 2 and 3. General manager Brian Gutekunst says he likes the depth when it comes to the EDGE and tight end class in this draft, so don't be surprised if that's where the Packers take at least one of those positions.
No matter how you slice it, the Packers are in good shape to load up on offense, defense, and special teams, which is exactly what Gutekunst wants to do.
"I think we've got to remember that we're trying to win games and that takes all three phases," Gutekunst said Monday. "So we're going to load up as much as we can in all three phases."
