Last year, Emanuel Wilson led the NFL in preseason rushing yards, leading the Green Bay Packers to keep him on the 53-man roster. This year, even if they added Josh Jacobs to replace Aaron Jones, kept AJ Dillon and drafted MarShawn Lloyd, Wilson is still on pace to make the team once again.
His efficiency when given chances is notable, and you can make a strong case for Wilson as the second best running back on the roster at the moment.
Last year, Emanuel Wilson signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent. He thought his career could be over when the Broncos released him three days later, but a new opportunity arose in Green Bay and he has made the most out of it.
"I felt like I proved to myself that I can do it," Wilson told Packers.com. "I can be that guy whenever my time comes."
The second-year running back started training camp as the fourth player at the position on the depth chart. But his performance and injuries to Dillon and Lloyd prompted a higher workload for him.
"He's really talented and that's obvious, and we're gonna keep pushing him to try to get the most out of him," head coach Matt LaFleur said. "He's been a great addition to the locker room. He's a great teammate. He's really good in the room. It's funny because I always try to get him to smile each and every day because he is a quiet guy. It's good to get him to smile."
Another good production against the Baltimore Ravens would most likely secure him a spot on the 53-man roster.
The path to the 53-man roster for five other players:
QB Michael Pratt
Pratt has been better than Sean Clifford throughout training camp, but it's not a decisive difference. The seventh-round rookie had a solid series in the two-minute period during the joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens, and if he can carry the momentum into the preseason finale, he will have a considerable chance to dethrone Clifford as QB2.
WRs Grant DuBose and Malik Heath
It's been a tough battle between Malik Heath and Grant DuBose for the sixth wide receiver spot, and it's hard to imagine the Packers keeping seven. DuBose is a talented offensive piece, but for a bottom of the roster player, special teams contributions are the deciding factor.
OT Travis Glover
Kadeem Telfort has been the fourth tackle behind Zach Tom, Rasheed Walker, and Andre Dillard. Travis Glover competes with him for that spot, but his game against the Denver Broncos was underwhelming. Brian Gutekunst would probably prefer to keep his sixth-round pick around, so a solid performance versus the Ravens could be imperative.
LB Kristian Welch
Welch was one of the few bright spots the Packers had in Denver. He is a core special teamer, and showed he can eventually be a defensive contributor too. His role is too similar to Eric Wilson's, but Welch is younger and more athletic. If he can play well against his former team, maybe the Packers find a way to keep him on the 53 — be it by releasing Wilson or a player from a different position.
