Packers president confirms suspicion about leadership group that will remain intact and guide the team forward
Ed Policy decided to keep Matt LaFleur, Brian Gutekunst, and Russ Ball.
The Green Bay Packers decided not only to retain, but to extend their leadership group. Last week, president Ed Policy confirmed new deals with head coach Matt LaFleur, general manager Brian Gutekunst, and executive vice president/director of football operations Russ Ball.
While the Packers did not share the details of the contract, it’s a clear indication that the current structure will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
Ed Policy confirms that front office and staff are aligned
While there were some rumors about a potential change in the leadership structure, that ultimately did not happen. Policy decided to maintain the organizational chart built by Mark Murphy in 2018.
Essentially, it’s a three-headed monster with LaFleur, Gutekunst, and Ball, and all of them respond directly to the president.
“We are excited to extend our commitment to Brian, Matt and Russ as the leaders of our football operations,” Policy said via statement. “Their steadfast dedication, passion and collaboration have remained constant in our drive to compete at the highest level.”
Policy admitted that the results in 2025 weren’t satisfying, but that doesn’t seem to have changed the perception that the president has about his top leaders.
“While we are all disappointed with the way this season ended, we remain aligned in purpose and have spent considerable time over the past weeks collaborating on a path forward,” Policy added. “I am exceedingly confident we have the right people to achieve our goal. The entire Packers organization looks forward to supporting every effort to bring our community and fans another championship that they very much deserve.”
The Packers didn’t build the leadership group at the same time. In 2018, the team promoted Gutekunst to general manager and Ball to his current position while Mike McCarthy was still the head coach. LaFleur came on board in 2019.
Green Bay aligned their timelines in the previous extension, back in 2022, and kept the alignment with its three leaders now. Despite some added pressure over the 2025 season, the Packers might even go through some changes in the near future, but the people making the big calls are the same.
