If you think quarterback Jordan Love was good in his first season as a starter, wait until what's ahead. That's the perception of Rashan Gary, arguably the second most valuable player on the Green Bay Packers' roster. Last week, the edge defender went on the Rich Eisen Show and shared a promising update after watching the quarterback in OTAs and minicamp.
"People haven't seen nothing yet," Gary said. "You know the things that he's been doing in camp, that y'all can't see in the practice, y'all can't see the throws that he doing and how he's putting them on the money. Man, it's ridiculous right now, and I just can't wait till the season so he can display it, but he's in store for a hell of a season for us."
Beyond the physical ability to make throws, which was already obvious last season, Gary mentioned how Love has developed mentally as a quarterback.
"The main thing for me is understanding where to go with the ball," Gary added. "Always making the right decision, not forcing the ball downfield, and trying to fit it in certain windows. Things like that."
After a few tough years with off-the-field topics dominating the talk about the Packers, leadership is another important characteristic for Love to have.
"He's a guy you could talk to, man. I’m talking about from team's defense to offense," Gary mentioned. "All guys you know believe in him and you can have a conversation with him. I'm talking about anytime at lunch table, you know you have any question you sit down and talk to him. Those types of guys that men go to war and play for."
Jordan Love had an up and down start last season, but from week 9 on, he established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in football. On that stretch, he was third in adjusted EPA/play and fourth in success rate, leading the Packers to the playoffs — and to a playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys. And all that happened with the least expensive and youngest offensive roster in football, and every wide receiver on the roster was a first- or second-year player.
Contract
Now, the big discussion around Jordan Love is his contract extension. Entering the last year of his deal, he's slated to make $11 million in 2024. However, both sides know he won't play without a new contract in place.
General manager Brian Gutekunst has said they want an extension done before training camp begins in late July, and Love himself said he's confident about the negotiations. The deal might surpass Trevor Lawrence's extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which got him $55 million per season in new money.
