Packers’ pending free agent arrested in New York on gun charges, report says
Rasheed Walker is expected back in court on March 19.
Green Bay Packers left tackle Rasheed Walker was arrested at New York City’s La Guardia airport on Friday morning after he tried to check a bag with a handgun and ammunition, according to The New York Post. He is set to become a free agent in March after playing four years in Green Bay.
The criminal complaint says Walker, 25 years old, was taken into custody just before 11 a.m. (ET) after telling a Delta Air Lines employee that his luggage contained a locked box holding his 9mm Glock pistol. Port Authority police found the firearm and 36 rounds of ammunition in a locked case.
Rasheed Walker was charged with two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm.
Walker appeared in Queens County Criminal Court on the gun charge and was later released. He is due back in court on March 19.
Walker’s side
Arthur Aidala, Walker’s lawyer, told the New York Post that the arm was legally licensed in Wisconsin, and the player didn’t know he couldn’t travel with it to New York.
“It was in a locked box and he disclosed it to the people at the airport,” Aidala said. “He told a person from Delta he was traveling with a firearm. He mistakenly thought because he had a licensed firearm and it was in a locked box that he was able to travel with it. We are confident the case will be dismissed.”
On the field
A former seventh-round pick in 2022, Rasheed Walker took over as the Packers’ starting left tackle after David Bakhtiari couldn’t recover from his knee injury early in 2023. He started 52 games for the Packers over the past three years combining regular season and playoffs. He allowed 102 pressures and 14 sacks over this period.
After four years in the league, the offensive lineman is now set to hit free agency — the Packers are expected to move forward with former first-round pick Jordan Morgan at left tackle.
Walker will have to go back to court on March 19, which could potentially affect his free agency process. The legal negotiating period for pending free agents starts on March 9, and players can officially sign deals with new teams on March 11.
