The Green Bay Packers have made their first practice squad elevation of the 2025 season. A day ahead of the regular season opener against the Detroit Lions, the Packers have elevated rookie cornerback Micah Robinson to the active roster for gameday. Elevated, he will receive a regular gamecheck and reverts back to the practice squad on Monday.

Why the Packers made the move

There are several motivations for the Packers to make this move. First, general manager Brian Gutekunst values his draft picks, and Robinson was a seventh-round selection this year. With the elevation, the defensive back receives another opportunity to prove himself. He had made the initial 53-man roster, but was waived a day later when the Packers signed linebacker Nick Niemann.

The second reason is because Robinson offers depth at cornerback for Green Bay, since projected starter Nate Hobbs is officially listed as questionable to play due to a knee injury.

Micah Robinson was on the field for 97 defensive snaps during the preseason, 90 at outside corner and seven in the box. He had strong performances, allowing a 68.8 passer rating when targeted. On special teams, Robinson played on 29 snaps—kickoff return, kick coverage, punt return, punt coverage, and field goal blocking units.

NFL rules

The NFL increased the size of the practice squad during Covid and kept some of the adjusted rules. Of the 16 players, 10 must be players with up to two accrued seasons, and there’s no restrictions for the other six. There’s also an extra spot for a player with an International Pathway Program exemption—for Green Bay, it’s Irish kicker Mark McNamee.

Throughout the season, teams can elevate practice squad players for gameday. Each player can be elevated up to three times for the same team without being a member of the active 53-man roster. After the game, the player reverts back to the PS.
