Aaron Rodgers has a strong connection with the Green Bay Packers. He started 15 seasons for the team, 18 seasons total in Green Bay—he will be an obvious Packers Hall of Famer and will have number 12 retired by the franchise.
But even though he has been public about his affection for the franchise, the Packers can ultimately be a factor in his decision about where to play in 2025. And facing Green Bay twice a year could be a motivation to choose the Minnesota Vikings.
According to ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter, that's a consideration—alongside the chance to keep facing the Chicago Bears.
However, the decision is not only Rodgers'. The Vikings are still considering their options, but playing last year's first-round pick J.J. McCarthy seems to be the most likely scenario.
"I think he knows that Minnesota would be an ideal situation. He could go try to beat the Green Bay Packers, which I'm sure he'd like to do. He could go try to continue to own the Chicago Bears as he had in the past. He could go follow the same path that Brett Favre once did, going from Green Bay and finishing up in Minnesota.
I just don't know if it's practical for the Vikings. I think there's a part of it that's appealing. Aaron Rodgers still played, no matter what you say, at a fairly high level last year, and probably could step into that team, in that offense, with those weapons, and continue to play at a high level. But let's remember, this is a team that invested the tenth overall pick last year in J.J. McCarthy. The team is behind J.J. McCarthy, it believes in J.J. McCarthy. If they bring in Aaron Rodgers, who knows what type of impact and influence that will have on the quarterback who is their future?"
This is a different situation than what the Packers handled with Brett Favre. Rodgers obviously didn't like it when the team drafted Jordan Love, and his relationship with general manager Brian Gutekunst and the rest of the front office would never be the same.
Nonetheless, Rodgers had a positive relationship with Jordan Love and talked multiple times about his support for the Packers when the New York Jets wasn't playing.
In 2008, Brett Favre clearly wanted to face and beat the Packers. Green Bay traded him to the Jets, but he ended up going to Minnesota one year later.
Aaron Rodgers might have a similar path, even though the circumstances are clearly different.
More than the possibility of playing against the Packers, it makes sense for Rodgers to play for the Vikings because it's the potential landing spot with the most chance of winning a championship. The Pittsburgh Steelers could be the second one, with the New York Giants as a last alternative.
At 41, Rodgers is only playing because he loves football and because he wants to win. Playing for the Vikings might affect his legacy with the Packers, but a real shot at winning his second ring is a worthwhile risk to take.
