The Green Bay Packers have built their initial 53-man roster, and also have switched kickers on day 2. So now, it's time to evaluate the roster and see what needs or doesn't need to change until week 1, when the Packers travel to Brazil to face the Philadelphia Eagles.

Recently, we've mentioned a few players the Packers could add on waivers or street free agency. So now it's time to talk about available players who Green Bay should not add.

WR Hunter Renfrow

During the 2023 season, before the young wide receivers took off for the Packers, there was a lot of talk about adding a veteran wide receiver — and some people mentioned that Renfrow was the ideal trade target. Fast forward to now, Renfrow was allowed to hit free agency by the Las Vegas Raiders and is still unsigned. At the same time, the Packers have six really good receivers on the 53-man roster, even if you consider that none of Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Bo Melton, and Malik Heath is a bona fide WR1.

They even needed to waive Grant DuBose and Samori Toure, who are playable receivers, because there was not enough room for everybody. So it doesn't make any sense to add a player like Renfrow, a slot-only, limited-ceiling type.

RB Matt Breida

Without AJ Dillon for the entire season and maybe without Marshawn Lloyd for the first couple of weeks because of injuries, the Packers might want to sign an external free agent running back. Ideally, it would be someone who has already played in a similar system to hit the ground running, so you could think that Matt Breida is an option — he has already played under Kyle Shanahan.

But while he was a good player in his prime, it happened a long time ago. His best season came in 2018, when he had 814 rushing yards. And six seasons are an eternity in running back years.

Last season, he averaged 2.8 yards per carry for the New York Giants. This season, the 49ers brought him back because of multiple injuries at the position, and even knowing the system he couldn't beat former Packers running back Patrick Taylor for a 53-man roster spot.

K Mason Crosby

Look, I know Packers fans love Mason Crosby and that he had special moments for the Packers. But while he was a good kicker, he was never a great kicker. Crosby played for the Packers between 2007 and 2022, and he never made it to the Pro Bowl or an All-Pro team. Now, he's 39 and was just a replacement kicker last year — he signed with the Los Angeles Rams and didn't even play, and played five games for the New York Giants, converting five of seven field goals and six of seven extra points.

The Packers did make a mistake by drafting Anders Carlson, but the decision to move on from Crosby made sense. Now, they claimed rookie Brayden Narveson off waivers from the Tennessee Titans, so hopefully the Crosby talk goes away.
