Packers have multiple compelling reasons to capitalize on fresh market development before rivals react
Tyler Biadasz is a great option for Green Bay.
The NFL market is volatile. While free agency had a certain number of names who could fit what the Green Bay Packers need and want, more players can (unexpectedly or not) become available even before the new league year starts in March.
That’s what happened to center Tyler Biadasz. The veteran got released by the Washington Commanders on Thursday, in a move that creates cap space but likely involves more than that. For the Packers, a veteran like Biadasz could be the ideal solution for a big roster hole.
Why the Commanders released Biadasz
The Commanders’ release of Tyler Biadasz was certainly a surprise that nobody saw coming. Sure, Biadasz took a slight step back in 2025, but it wasn’t enough to warrant a release with not much of a salary cap savings.
He’s only 28 years old, and seemed to be in their future plans. Only two factors come into my head regarding his release, and that’s his Week 17 injury, which didn’t seem too severe, and the change in the offensive scheme. Biadasz will still be a great option for a team that needs a center, and he’s a locker room guy through and through as well.
He’s a perfect option for the Packers
There are several reasons to justify why Tyler Biadasz would be a good addition for the Packers — and need is the obvious one. Elgton Jenkins is expected to be cut, while Sean Rhyan will hit free agency as well.
But the most important motives are the ones that specifically involve Biadasz. There are at least five.
Solid play
Jenkins was fine at pass protection, Rhyan was better at run blocking. Biadasz offers both a solid level, and his experience as a starting center with 5,616 NFL snaps at the position would be extremely valuable.
Age
Even though he’s not a young player entering his second NFL deal like the Packers tend to prefer, Biadasz is only 28 and can still play for several years. He may not be the perfect long-term solution, but he’s a viable starter for more than a season.
Compensatory pick formula
Because Biadasz got released by the Commanders, he’s considered a street free agent, and not an unrestricted free agent. That means his signing wouldn’t affect the compensatory pick formula — an impactful aspect for the Packers, who are already short in terms of draft capital after trading two first-round picks for Micah Parsons.
Rival competition
If the Packers don’t sign him, the Detroit Lions very well might. The divisional rival needs a center as badly, if not more, as the Packers, and general manager Brad Holmes has shown willingness to spend when necessary.
Fast solution before FA starts
Because he was released, Biadasz doesn’t need to wait until the new league year starts on March 11 to sign a new deal. He is free to immediately sign with anyone as a vested veteran, and that early resolution would give the Packers more flexibility to face the next steps of the free agent process — probably without Elgton Jenkins.
