Despite trying to play it off, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is at the epicenter of future quarterback questions.
Will he stay for another year? Does he decide to retire? Is trading him even an option?
These are all the questions surrounding him and the Packers. Losing in Week 18 has made that so. Eliminating them from playoff contention, sending Green Bay into the offseason.
His postgame discussion with Detroit Lions WR Jamison Williams is where it all stems.
Let's assume, however, Rodgers wants to keep playing. Just not for the Packers. Can he be traded and does he have a market?
For starters, he does NOT have a 'No Trade' clause in his contract. What he does have is the Packers on the hook for cap numbers over $30 million until his contract expires at the end of 2026. With $3.49 million in guarantees only.
However, the Green Bay Packers only save money after the 2024 season based on his current deal. Any sort of trade would need either a restructure of some kind, an agreement among teams or for a franchise willing to take on his contract in full.
These are all the teams who will (likely) be in the QB Market this offseason. As well as their estimated cap space without factoring in the cap increase for 2023:
- Atlanta Falcons – $115.9 million
- Seattle Seahawks – $47.5 million
- Houston Texans – $39.6 million
- Las Vegas Raiders – $20.9 million
- Indianapolis Colts – $19.8 million
- New York Jets – $7.9 million
- Washington Commanders – $11.6 million
- Carolina Panthers – $4.6 million (over)
- Tennessee Titans – $24.1 million (over)
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers (?) – $43.4 million (over)
- New Orleans Saints – $53.4 million (over)
For perspective Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford and Deshaun Watson were all traded in the last two seasons. All three for multiple first-round picks.
Not just for quality of player, but due to the contract attached to them as well.
Rodgers will take this off-season to consider his future. And the Green Bay Packers as well.
However, should he decide he wants to continue playing in a different uniform, there will be a market for the Packers quarterback. What factors into it will decide where he would go.
