The Houston Texans put together one hell of a staff for the 2023-24 season, which saw them win a playoff game and fall short of moving on to the AFC Championship.
They went from a three-win team in 2022 to a 10-win team and a playoff win with a rookie head coach, a rookie defensive coordinator, and a rookie quarterback. You just don't see that often.
After all of the Texans' success this season, other teams want in on it. We have seen the team interview Bobby Slowik for a head coaching position, as well as Jerrod Johnson, the QB coach, for an OC position.
Now, another guy was interviewed, but this time, the Texans lost him.
According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson of KCPR2, the Cleveland Browns are hiring the Texans' defensive line Jacques Cesaire as their defensive line coach after his contract expired in Houston.
Cesaire played eight years in the NFL as a defensive lineman. He played for the San Diego Chargers, who are now the Los Angeles Chargers, as their defensive tackle in a three-technique most of the time. Throughout his eight years, Cesaire finished with 12.5 sacks and 220 tackles, according to Pro Football Reference.
Cesaire has been an NFL coach for four seasons now. In 2020 and 2021, he was the assistant defensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills, according to Pro Football History. Last season and this season, he was the defensive line coach for the Texans. He is now making a lateral move to coach the team the Texans just beat in the playoffs.
The Texans will now have to find a replacement for Cesaire, who head coach DeMeco Ryans did not handpick. Ryans will likely get someone from down the tree in the San Francisco 49ers organization, so that is certainly something to be on the lookout for.
Cesaire is a great coach, but I have a hard time thinking the defensive line will be worse without him.
