Midway through the 2024 season, the Houston Texans traded defensive tackle Khalil Davis to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2026 seventh-round draft pick.
On Monday, Davis decided to officially hang up his cleats after a five-year career.
DT Khalil Davis is retiring from the NFL
Davis was selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Buccaneers. He won a Super Bowl as a rookie with Tampa Bay, but was released during his second season with the team. Davis then caught on with the Indianapolis Colts, but it was very short-lived as he was waived weeks later.
He was signed to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad shortly thereafter, but in 2022 he failed to make their 53-man roster. Davis had a second run with the Bucs and a brief stint with the Los Angeles Rams later that season, but did not appear in any regular season games.
In 2023 Davis joined the Birmingham Stallions of the USFL and won a championship with them. He was then signed by the Texans later that summer, making their practice squad out of training camp and was promoted to the active roster in September. It was a career year for Davis, recording two sacks, 32 total tackles, and one forced fumble in 15 games.
He didn’t make much of an impact in 2024, leading to him being traded to San Francisco. Davis appeared in just three games with the 49ers, recording three total tackles. He will now move on to the next phase of his life, and can reflect on his football journey that lasted longer than the average NFL career. Still just 28 years old, a return could be on the table if he chooses to do so.
