The Houston Texans should be big spenders in free agency. Yes, they have 10 starting roles to fill, and that money will go rather quickly, but I expect at least one big splash to be made this offseason. The one that is looking more and more likely is free agent running back Saquon Barkley.
Barkley has followed most of the big-name Texans' players on social media as of late, and there have been hints and rumors that he has wanted to join the team, as he and the New York Giants are looking unlikely to get an extension done.
However, now there is more news, but this time, it's Barkley being pretty clear with what he wants.
"The Texans are in a much different state than they were a year ago," NFL insider Aaron Wilson said at the combine. "They are the defending AFC South champions. They are a team that a lot of people, a lot of free agents, want to play for. Perhaps even Saquon Barkley. I have been told it's his favorite team right now and his choice for free agency."
The Texans have the sixth-most cap space in the NFL at nearly $74 million. That's one of the perks of having a quarterback on a rookie contract. According to A to Z Sports' Free Agency Projections, Barkley's deal could look like this: 3 yrs, $31.5M, $10.5M APY, $15M GTD
They can certainly afford Barkley, but it's more about what they want, who else they want to get in free agency, and if Barkley even wants the deal the Texans offer. We are still a few steps away from this becoming an official pairing, but it's looking very likely for the two sides.
