While Houston ultimately fell short of getting to the Super Bowl, losing to the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round, they very well could find themselves as Super Bowl contenders next season if they make a splash in the first round of the NFL Draft.
If he is available, which he likely will be, the Texans should take Georgia wide receiver Ladd McConkey.
McConkey had a great week in Mobile, being named the best receiver at the Senior Bowl by his peers.
Some fans may push back on Houston taking a receiver in the first round. After all, Nico Collins and Tank Dell each had fantastic seasons. However, all due respect to Collins, he was far from being the player he is now before Stroud arrived. Heading into the 2023 season, Collins had 70 career catches and three touchdowns- he had 80 catches alone this past season.
Plus, in the AFC, you can never have enough weapons. If you want to get to the Super Bowl, you have to build your roster to beat the Chiefs. Kansas City has two tremendous cornerbacks in L'Jarius Sneed and Trent McDuffie that will keep Collins and Dell in check. One of the biggest reason the Bengals overcame the Chiefs, and why they have been a constant thorn in the side of Kansas City, is because of their depth when it comes to the skill positions. Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd, Joe Mixon- that's a lot of guys for even the best defenses to try and contain.
Drafting McConkey would give Houston their own deadly trio of receivers. They can also interchange lining up McConkey and Dell in the slot. With a quarterback who is already one of the best in the NFL, a deep group of receivers, and a great offensive coordinator in Bobby Slowik, the Texans would have the potential to be the NFL's top offense.
Do they have other needs? Sure. They could do with getting another cornerback, especially if Steven Nelson doesn't return. They could also target an edge rusher to put opposite of Will Anderson. However, they can address both of those needs in free agency and/or later on in the draft. If you have the opportunity to get weapons on offense, you do it. Especially in today's NFL.
