Back in 2024, the Houston Texans plucked running back Joe Mixon away from the Cincinnati Bengals to build around quarterback C.J. Stroud, adding a veteran playmaker to help take some of the pressure off of Stroud and give their offense some balance on the ground.

It worked, initially, as he rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns, catching 36 passes along the way in his first season in Houston. However, in the offseason, Mixon suffered a mysterious foot injury that kept him out for the entire season, and now has fans wondering if the star running back will ever play another down.

To further add to the confusion, the Texans have been suspiciously mum about his injury, and they’ve taken plenty of flak for their silence over the injury and Mixon’s status.

Joe Mixon’s future hanging in balance

On Thursday, Texans’ general manager Nick Caserio took to the air to try and clear up the Mixon situation, but instead, seemingly made it even more murky.

“We’re, at some point, probably going to see Joe for an evaluation to kind of see where he is,” Caserio said. “Honestly, Joe worked really hard to try and get himself ready. I think he’s committed to try to be able to play football this year. We’ll see if he’s physically is able to do it or not. So, it’s a little bit of a moving target still. Before we get to the season, I’m sure we’ll have an idea— probably know before then— of what the situation is.”

For a TL;DR: the Texans have no idea where Mixon’s health is at, and have no idea what sort of timetable he is on for recovery. They seem to be hopeful that he can try to play football this year, but he hasn’t done any work since last season’s OTAs when he was in a walking boot.

Why have the Texans been so silent over Mixon’s injury?

This sort of injury begs the question: Why have the Texans been so silent about it?

In January, Nick Caserio called it “as unique a situation, an injury, as I’ve been associated with”.

“It wasn’t like he was riding a snowmobile or anything like that,” Caserio explained. “It was more of a medical condition or situation that never… really didn’t improve maybe as much as everybody would have hoped. I’m not trying to evade the question, that’s the reality of the situation. He didn’t jump off a building. He wasn’t cliff diving or anything. He wasn’t doing anything irresponsible. It was just a freak thing.”

That’s been as substantive an answer as has been provided so far regarding the whole situation. In a way, it could simply be to protect Mixon. If it is such a bizarre and perhaps career-ending injury or condition, then protecting Mixon is the right thing to do. It’s no doubt frustrating to fans, who are searching for answers, but Mixon has a right to protect his privacy if it is such a worrisome condition.

However, the speculation will only grow as we move forward and head into next season. Can the Texans rely on Mixon for the 2026 season? Will Mixon retire, as many have speculated? It’s unclear. All we can do now is wait and hope that he gets back to 100 percent.
