The Texans might have competition if they hope to re-sign one key free agent.

The Texans do not have many important free agents to re-sign, as is to be expected when you finish with the second-worst record in the league.

Rasheem Green, Jonathan Owens, and Chris Moore are probably the most impactful players that are heading to free agency. However, one national media outlet thinks the Texans have a pending free agent who is being overlooked.

ESPN published an article listing the most underrated and overrated free agent at every position. One Texan made an appearance in the "underrated" category.

Ogbonnia Okoronkwo is listed as the most underrated edge rusher heading to free agency in 2023.

From ESPN:

Okoronkwo recorded only five sacks in 2022, but that came while playing just 44% of snaps — which was actually a career-high. Given more opportunity, Okoronkwo could be a productive edge defender, with 19% and 31% pass rush and run stop win rates, respectively (which ranked 13th and fourth at the position). Put him on a better team and the sacks will come.

Okoronkwo's five sacks in 2022 were the second-most on the team behind Jerry Hughes. It is not hard to imagine Okoronkwo putting up even more impressive numbers in a larger role.

The edge rusher out of Oklahoma spent the first four seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Rams. While in LA, Okoronkwo played a reserve role and was not re-signed after his rookie deal.

The Texans took a flier on the defensive end before the 2022 season on a one-year deal. Okoronkwo rewarded the Texans by having his most productive season as a pro in 2022.

Okoronkwo finished the 2022 season with 44 combined tackles, five sacks, and nine tackles for loss. Remember, this production came with the player being on the field for less than half of all defensive snaps.

The Texans currently have more cap space than all but two teams and are not exactly loaded with talent on the defensive front. If the team wants to bring Okoronkwo back in 2023, they should be able to get a deal done.
