The Houston Texans had some business to take care of before the 2023 season and they got it done.

Stud right tackle Tytus Howard was set to enter a contract year in 2023 after the team picked up his fifth-year option back in 2022. If the tackle was allowed to enter free agency, the Texans would have had immense competition for his services.

We heard rumblings earlier about the Texans making a Howard extension a priority. Luckily for Howard and the Texans, the parties were able to agree to an extension earlier this week.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the deal is for three years and $56M with $36.5M guaranteed. This means Howard will hit free agency in 2027, the same year as star teammate and fellow tackle Laremy Tunsil. With new guarantees of $36.5M, only six right tackles have more guaranteed money than Howard.

The Texans are now in the enviable position of having two stud tackles under contract for several seasons. This will do wonders for young QB CJ Stroud, who will need to stay upright for the Texans to compete.

Howard, a first-round pick out of Alabama State, looked like a huge reach at first. However, Howard has slowly transformed into one of the more reliable right tackles in the league. In 2022, Howard earned a career-best 67.9 PFF grade and allowed just three sacks.

A case could be made that the Texans' best offensive players are the two tackles. It was crucial to get both under contract long-term, and now the team can focus on updating the rest of the offense next offseason.
