The Texans have been one of the more active teams in free agency thus far.

The team has signed veteran receiver Robert Woods, traded for guard Shaq Mason, and brought in former 49er Jimmie Ward, just to name a few moves.

At the beginning of free agency, the Texans sported the third-most cap space in the league. Now, just a few days later, the Texans have the 19th-most cap space. This led to the team deciding to part ways with a veteran to save some money.

NFL insider Aaron Wilson announced that the Texans will be releasing veteran defensive end Mario Addison in a cost-cutting move.

Addison completed his 12th season in the NFL in 2022 for the Texans. The veteran has accumulated 68 sacks in his career, and had a career-best 11 sacks in 2017 for the Panthers.

Before the 2022 season, Addison signed a two-year, $7.7 million contract with Houston. In his lone season for the Texans, Addison collected 15 tackles, one sack, and one tackle for loss. The veteran mostly played a reserve role and was used as a mentor on a young unit.

The Texans have been busy attacking the defensive line in free agency, adding Chase Winovich, Sheldon Rankins, and Hassan Ridgeway to the room. For Addison, the writing was on the wall after these moves.

Interestingly, Wilson does note that the Texans' "door isn't closed," on Addison. Perhaps Addison would stick around in Houston a cheaper one-year deal.
