The Texans exited the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft with two potential building blocks. CJ Stroud is a young quarterback with limitless potential, and Will Anderson Jr. is one of the most polished defensive prospects in the entire draft.

It goes without saying that both will start from day one, but they could both have a significant impact from day one as well. Stroud and Anderson both had storied college careers at elite programs, so the transition to the NFL game shouldn't be too big of a challenge.

In fact, both rookies have the potential to break some Texans' records in their inaugural pro season.

Who do you think holds the Texans' record for most passing yards by a rookie QB? The answer is Davis Mills, who threw for 2,664 yards in 2021. The passing touchdown rookie record is held by Deshaun Watson, who had 19 in 2017.

Both of these milestones could be eclipsed by Stroud if the QB performs as expected. Accuracy is no problem for Stroud, and a revamped Texans' receiver room should help him adjust.

If Davis Mills can throw for 2,664 yards as a rookie with Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins at receiver, Stroud should have no problem eclipsing the 3,000-yard mark with a far superior group of talent.

On the defensive side of the ball, it seems likely that Anderson could break the Texans' single-season sacks record. The record is currently just six sacks, done in 2011 by Brooks Reed, and in 2012 by Whitney Mercilus.

Anderson collected 10 sacks in 2022 for the Crimson Tide and had a whopping 17.5 in 2021. The Texans beefed up the interior defensive line this offseason, so teams will not only be able to focus on Anderson. It is not hard to see a scenario in which Anderson leads all rookies in sacks and sets a franchise record in the process.

After a wild first round, the Texans currently do not own a second-rounder. Do not be surprised if the Texans trade back into the second, depending on who is available. I expect wide receiver, offensive line, and secondary to be the next positions addressed.
