Not only will the roster in Houston look much different in 2023, but the coaching staff will as well.
After several seasons of instability, the team hopes to have found continuity with a new staff. DeMeco Ryans returned to Houston as the head coach and brought several coaches from San Francisco with him.
One of those former 49ers is new offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. Slowik may be young, but don't let that fool you.
At a recent press conference, Slowik mentioned that he still goes back and studies film from the Gary Kubiak era.
Slowik mentioned a couple of Texans' greats Andre Johnson and Matt Schaub. Johnson is the all-time receiving leader in Houston and Schaub is the all-time passing leader.
Schaub had a couple of impressive seasons in Houston, earning Pro Bowl nods in 2009 and 2012. Johnson is one of the best receivers in NFL history, currently 11th in all-time receiving yards.
Kubiak is also the winningest coach in Texans' history, so Slowik seems to be looking in the right direction. The Kubiak-era offense would be a welcome sight for Texan fans who have endured the last several years. In 2022, the Texans finished with the 25th-ranked passing offense. Meanwhile, the 49ers finished with the 14th-ranked passing attack.
With a heavy 49er influence, it's expected that the Texans will employ a run-heavy scheme focused on short, quick passes. This system also plays well to rookie QB CJ Stroud's strengths.
If Slowik can get Stroud to multiple Pro Bowls like Kubiak did with Schaub, that will certainly be a job well done.
