Texans re-sign key depth piece ahead of free agency
The Texans are bringing another veteran back for the 2023 season.
The Texans continue to make moves before free agency officially starts next week.
On Wednesday, it was announced that the team re-signed veteran center Scott Quessenberry. Additionally, the team claimed quarterback EJ Perry from the division-rival Jaguars.
On Thursday, the team announced that another depth piece will be back in 2023.
According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, the Texans have agreed to terms with veteran safety MJ Stewart.
Stewart played in all 17 games for the Texans in 2022, mainly contributing on special teams.
The safety impressed in limited play time, finishing with 41 total tackles, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble. Stewart's performance earned a solid 70.1 grade from PFF.
2022 was Stewart's first season in Houston after spending two seasons in Tampa Bay, and two seasons in Cleveland.
Tampa Bay drafted Stewart in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The safety started five games as a rookie before being relegated to backup duty for his sophomore campaign. Stewart was waived before the 2020 season and claimed by Cleveland.
Stewart became a key special-teamer for the Browns, collecting 69 tackles and two interceptions over two seasons in Cleveland.
Stewart's re-signing provides some veteran experience in the safety room next to the talented Jalen Pitre. Pitre and Stewart are currently joined by Eric Murray as the only safties on the roster. Jonathan Owens, who finished third in tackles in 2022, is headed for free agency.
