The Texans have been one of the most active teams this offseason, adding multiple starters both in free agency and the draft.

Most of the Texans' own free agents were not re-signed, which is understandable considering the team won just three games. However, one free agent was re-signed on Thursday to a one-year deal.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Linebacker and core special teamer Neville Hewitt will return to Houston for at least one more season.

Hewitt has spent most of his NFL career as a backup/special teams contributor. The linebacker did prove he could handle a larger load, however, starting all 16 games for the Jets in 2020. Hewitt finished that season with a career-high 134 tackles and six tackles for loss.

In Hewitt's first season with the Texans in 2021, the linebacker played in all 17 games, starting in five. Hewitt ended the 2021 season with 60 tackles. In 2022, Hewitt moved into a reserve role, playing in 14 games mostly on special teams. Hewitt had 14 tackles and one forced fumble in the 2022 season.

Hewitt provides depth at the linebacker position, something I have noted is needed on this roster. Cory Littleton, Denzel Perryman, and Christian Harris are the presumed starting linebackers for 2023. Behind that trio is Hewitt, rookie Henry To'oTo'o, Blake Cashman, Christian Kirksey, Jake Hansen, and Garret Wallow.
