The Texans could have just found a couple of gems in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Nick Caserio just cannot sit still, pulling off another trade to land the No. 205 pick via Buffalo and selecting Iowa State receiver Xavier Hutchinson. This was just after using the No. 201 pick on Jarrett Patterson, a center out of Notre Dame.
Both of these guys could not only make the team, but compete for playing time immediately.
Patterson only allowed two sacks in his career at Notre Dame, and Xavier Hutchinson was one of the most productive receivers in college football in 2022.
So why did these players fall? Well, there are concerns about Patterson's lateral mobility and quickness. He could have a hard time adjusting to the athleticism of NFL defensive tackles. His length also leaves a little to be desired. Nevertheless, Patterson has great size for the position and has the toughness to stick around.
Hutchinson fell most likely due to his slower-than-expected speed. With more emphasis being placed on speedy, shifty receivers, the tall possession receiver in Hutchinson slipped down boards. Hutchinson can still be productive as a red-zone threat in the league. At the very least, he provides an alternate style to most of the Texans' receivers.
The Texans' receiver room is much deeper than it was two months ago. Tank Dell and Hutchinson join Robert Woods, John Metchie III, Nico Collins, Noah Brown, and Steven Sims in Houston. Hutchinson could be a practice squad player in year one due to his lack of vertical quickness, but I also wouldn't be surprised to see another team scoop him up in that case.
While Juice Scruggs will likely secure the starting center spot, I would not be surprised to see Patterson earn the backup job. Scott Quessenberry was one of the worst interior linemen in the league last year, and Patterson has the upside to take his job.
