Texans veteran could be snatched by AFC foe
The Texans could lose a productive member of the offense in free agency.
Coming off of having the second-worst record in the league in 2022, the Texans have been very active this offseason.
With holes all around the roster, the team has done a nice job of adding talent. Jimmie Ward, Robert Woods, Shaq Mason, and Sheldon Rankins are just some of the notable additions to this point.
However, when you add talent, you can't always afford to keep your own.
It appears that the team may lose tight end Jordan Akins. NFL insider Aaron Wilson is reporting that the veteran is meeting with the Cleveland Browns.
If Akins indeed walks, the tight end position in Houston immediately looks very thin. Currently, the team only rosters Teagan Quitoriano and Brevin Jordan behind Akins.
Akins had the third-most receptions on the team in 2022 with 37. The tight end was also third on the team in receiving yards with 495. Additionally, Akins had two more touchdowns than the player with the second-most, finishing with five on the season.
Losing Akins would be a blow for the Texans. Not only does he appear to be finding his way after recording career-highs in receptions, yardage, and touchdowns, but he also averaged the 10th-best yards after catch above expected percentage (1.6%).
He tied former Texans receiver, Chris Moore, who's currently a free agent. The next-best mark was an average of 0.3%, which belonged to Nico Collins and tied for the 66th-best mark among all qualifying receivers.
In other words: The Texans are going to lose a player who is very good after the catch if they lose Akins.
