A certain former Texan has made it known how he feels about possibly returning to Houston.
While speaking with Fox 26's Mark Berman, Jadeveon Clowney said returning to Houston "would be nice." Clowney was drafted first overall in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Texans. The talented edge rusher spent five seasons in Houston but never lived up to his No. 1 status.
A free agent once again, Clowney is not shutting the door on Houston. Houston should not take the bait.
Don't get me wrong, Clowney was not a complete bust. The former Gamecock has three Pro Bowls and one second-team All-Pro under his belt.
However, he has never been an "elite" sack artist. The most sacks Clowney has collected in a season is 9.5, which he did in 2017 for Houston. The former top pick also has a couple of seasons with nine sacks, but other than that? He has six seasons with six or fewer sacks, including his most recent campaign in Cleveland when he collected just two.
To be fair, Clowney still grades out well as a run defender. However, the Texans made several moves to improve the run defense this offseason, and not as many to boost the pass rush. The young Will Anderson Jr. and Jonathan Greenard would benefit from getting the majority of snaps at the edge.
Clowney mentioned that his family is still in Houston and he trains in Houston. The veteran also shouted out DeMeco Ryans, saying he is a fan of the coach.
However, this is a new era in Houston. The Texans do not have many good memories from the Clowney era, and almost every single player from that era has moved on. The Texans should keep that door closed and fully embrace the young guns.
