The Houston Texans are going to be under a lot of pressure when the 2025 NFL Draft rolls around. They are basically in win-now mode, because soon, they won't have a rookie quarterback contract that they get to take advantage of.
So, yes, this draft is super important. They have to put the right pieces around Stroud. Year one in this thing, the Texans beat the Cleveland Browns in the playoffs but lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the next round. Last year, they beat the Los Angeles Chargers in the wild card round and lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the next round.
They have to get over that hump. It starts in the draft, and there are so many different possibilities that could happen at No. 25. Here are some of the biggest NFL Draft analysts in the business, and who they have the Texans drafting:
NFL MEDIA (CHARLES DAVIS) OG TYLER BOOKER, ALABAMA
Analysis: The Texans are determined to remake their O-line, and Booker moving in at guard only helps quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Date: March 27
YAHOO! SPORTS (NATE TICE) OT JOSH SIMMONS, OHIO STATE
Analysis: The Texans have had a bizarre offseason along the offensive line, but they’ve added enough players where they might be able to take a stash draft pick on a supremely talented tackle. Simmons would be going much higher than this if not for a torn patellar tendon that cut short his final season at Ohio State. When healthy, Simmons has the traits of a franchise left tackle.
Date: April 9
ESPN (MEL KIPER, JR.) OT JOSH CONERLY JR., OREGON
Analysis: The pass protection really hurt C.J. Stroud and the Houston offense last season. He was sacked 52 times. The Texans began an overhaul of the offensive line this offseason — including trading away left tackle Laremy Tunsil, the unit's one sure thing. They can't risk wasting another year of Stroud's rookie contract by forcing him to constantly fend for himself against opponent pass rushes. Houston signed Cam Robinson and Trent Brown, but it shouldn't be satisfied. Conerly is consistent, allowing just two sacks over his college career. He'd help keep Stroud clean in the pocket.
Date: April 8
CBS SPORTS (MIKE RENNER) OT JOSH SIMMONS, OHIO STATE
Analysis: Josh Simmons comes with a big injury red flag, but beggars can't be choosers. His first half of the season, before tearing his Patellar tendon, was as good as anyone else's in the class.
Date: March 17
PRO FOOTBALL FOCUS (TREVOR SIKKEMA) OT JOSH SIMMONS, OHIO STATE
Analysis: Simmons would go much higher in this mock draft if he weren't rehabbing from major knee surgery. But according to him, rehab is going great — so great that he might even have a personal pro day before the draft. That is huge news, as he looked like one of the top players in this class before getting hurt. The Texans need interior offensive line help, but they could take the top talent in Simmons to play opposite Laremy Tunsil and move Blake Fisher inside. Don’t force needs; pick good players.
Date: March 3
ESPN (MATT MILLER) OL JOSH SIMMONS, OHIO STATE
Analysis: The Texans have undergone massive turnover on a struggling offensive line, with Laremy Tunsil, Kenyon Green, and Shaq Mason departing and Cam Robinson, Laken Tomlinson, and Ed Ingram arriving. I expect the Texans to look for a young foundational player up front, and Simmons could be that. Before suffering a torn left patellar tendon in his right knee in mid-October, Simmons looked like a prime contender to be OT1 in this class. He has experience at both tackle spots with the size and length teams are looking for in a blindside blocker. Simmons moves with poise and balance, almost like a basketball player. His ceiling is very high, and he could be a rare franchise tackle available late in the first round.
Date: March 27
NFL.COM (DANIEL JEREMIAH) OL KELVIN BANKS, JR., TEXAS
Analysis: Previously, I had mocked Ohio State WR Emeka Egbuka to the Texans, but with the departure of Laremy Tunsil, it feels like the offensive line has moved to the top of the priority list.
Date: March 18
NFL.COM (LANCE ZIERLEIN) OL KELVIN BANKS, JR., TEXAS
Analysis: The Texans are officially in "win now" mode, as they trade up to grab a player who can improve protection at guard in Year 1 before eventually bouncing out to take over a tackle spot.
Date: March 3
Houston Texans could be looking at underrated tight end in the 2025 NFL Draft to give C.J. Stroud another weapon
That wouldn’t be a terrible idea.
