The Houston Texans, despite being a championship contender, have a list of needs that need to be addressed this offseason, whether it be through free agency or through the 2025 NFL Draft. So far, so good. But, there is still work to be done.
Because they weren't able to get it done during free agency, one of those needs was pushed to the draft, where it was expected that the Texans would try and take a player late in the draft. They needed a nickel for some depth, or just a versatile cornerback.
That's why they have met with the players they have met with during the pre-draft visit process, one of them being a cornerback who has the versatility to play in the slot. Why is that a need? Well, former safety turned slot, Jalen Pitre, played 12 games in the slot. And to be fair, it's still a question of whether that is the right foot or not. And the depth behind him isn't that great.
So, the thought was that the Texans would try and grab a guy who can serve as depth in the slot or on the outside, and give the Texans a guy to develop into a full-time slot of Pitre wasn't signed to an extension, and they let him walk.
That need, as long-winded as it sounds, is no longer a need, really. Sure, they can still draft a guy for depth, but they no longer have to draft to develop into a starter.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Texans have signed Pitre to an extension. The extension is a three-year deal worth $39 million. So, it's safe to say they have their guy.
Pitre struggled in coverage at times last season while playing in the slot. According to Sports Info Solutions, Pitre allowed 14 catches on 21 targets for 256 yards and three touchdowns.
So, this extension does come as a bit of a shock. But, they believe in him.
Houston Texans could be looking at underrated tight end in the 2025 NFL Draft to give C.J. Stroud another weapon
That wouldn’t be a terrible idea.
