The Houston Texans have the best edge rusher duo in the league with Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr. The two of them had the most combined pressures of any edge duo in the league, according to NFL Pro.
So, it's safe to say that taking an edge rusher early in the 2025 NFL Draft would be a little silly, right? The Texans need some defensive tackle help, both depth and even a starter if the right player is available, and they also need some secondary help. As far as the biggest needs on the defense, the edge rusher position, even depth isn't really that high up the list.
So, why are the Texans using one of their coveted top 30 visits to speak with an edge rusher who is projected to go in the top 50 of the draft. You only get 30 top 30 visits, and they're using one on a guy that they don't even need. Instead, they should be using the majority of their top 30 visits on offensive line as seeing how that's the biggest issue on the team.
But, they must really like something with the in-state kid.
Texans have top 30 visit with Texas A&M EDGE Nic Scourton
According to multiple reports, the Texans have used one of their top 30 visits on Nic Scourton, one of the best 5-10 edge rushers in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Nic Scourton is a talented defensive lineman who played for Texas A&M in 2024 after playing for Purdue before that. In January 2024, Scourton transferred to Texas A&M to play under new head coach Mike Elko. During his one season with the Aggies, he started all 12 games, leading the team with 14 tackles for loss and 5 sacks.
He earned First Team All-SEC honors and was named to the Walter Camp All-America Second Team. Against Arkansas, where his late-game strip sack secured a win, was when he was probably at his best in 2024. Scourton’s ability to play multiple positions on the defensive line and his effective pass-rush techniques stood out.
He size gives him the ability to play in both 4-3 or 3-4 fronts, but the versatility is pretty much from a 4i DE to a 7-tech OLB, and that's just not what the Texans need. He's going to be great in the NFL, but he's just not what the Texans need.
If they want to stay at the top of the AFC South with teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, and the Tennessee Titans all making offseason moves, all gunning for the Texans, then they can't draft a guy early who won't see the field.
