Divisional rivalries are crazy. The Texans and Indianapolis Colts do not like each other, and the two fan bases certainly don't. But they do respect each other when the other team is doing well. So, usually, fans wouldn't want a former player of their big-wig rivals.
But this is different.
On Tuesday, the Colts released Darius Leonard, or Shaq Leonard, as some of you may know him. He was once a top-three linebacker in the league and even made an All-Pro team at one point.
Texans fans, like most fan bases, want him on their team. Why wouldn't they, too? He would make the roster better. He may not be what he used to be after all the injuries and surgeries, but he could certainly provide depth on the linebacker corps.
But the thing is, the Texans cannot put in a claim for the recently waived linebacker.
Leonard has to go through the waiver wire, and in order, the Texans are not near the top, as teams with worse records are. So, there is a chance he doesn't make it to the Texans that way, too. However, the other part of that deal is if they claim Leonard, they have to pay $6.11M for the remainder of this season. The Texans have under $7 million in available cap space, and doing that would be pushing the boundary.
The good news is, there is a good chance no one claims Leonard at that price. If he makes it through waivers, he can sign a free agent deal with any team of his choice, and the number on the salary would then be whatever the new free agent deal is.
Maybe the Texans can make him an offer.
