The Houston Texans played a real scrappy game in Week 13 against the Denver Broncos that held major AFC playoff implications.
The Texans ultimately came out on top in the matchup but still sit in the 8th seed and would be the first team out of the playoffs if the season ended today. There's still much work to be done over the final five weeks of the 2023 season.
The Texans got a major boost from the referees in their Week 13 victory thanks to a brilliant play by rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud.
On a fourth-and-two from the seven-yard line, the Texans needed to convert in order to push their lead even higher toward the end of the first quarter. The play was blown dead after left tackle Larmey Tunsil was called for a false start.
However, Broncos linebacker Alex Singlton had a free release directly at the Texans quarterback and gave Stroud a shove after the play was blown dead, resulting in some choice words from the rookie. The two got in a heated altercation resulting in Singlton getting called for an unnecessary roughness penalty resulting in a first down.
Two plays later, the Texans punched the ball into the endzone with running back Dameon Pierce to take a 10-0 lead. Unfortunately star rookie wide receiver Tank Dell was seriously injured on the play.
After the game, Stroud addressed the chippy altercation between him and Singlton while providing the best sound bite of the year from the Texans.
"I'm a man, and I'm not going to let somebody just come push me," Stroud said after the game. "Especially at my house. You're not going to just touch me after the whistle when you clearly hear it. I'm not mad at that dude, he played hard, but I didn't like it. I gotta control my composure, but at the same time I'm a man, and like Druski said 'I'm gonna stand on business'."
That's the exact type of mindset you'd like to see from your franchise quarterback which is rare to see from a rookie in the league. Stroud isn't going to take anything lightly and will stick up for himself if needed.
Stroud finished the game 16-27 passing with 274 passing yards and one passing touchdown. The Texans will look to keep the energy and momentum going next week against the spiraling New York Jets with their eyes fixed on a return to the playoffs.
