The Houston Texans are becoming team players who want to play for rather than the other way around, which has been the case for the last four years. That's because of the way they played last season in winning a playoff game, but also because of the culture they have built and established.

The Texans went from a laughing stock of the NFL, where they were winning three games a year, it felt like, to immediately taking a massive jump. In 2022 they won three games, and last season they made the playoffs, won a playoff game, and had a chance to make it to the AFC Championship if you look at the halftime score against the Baltimore Ravens.

Now, players want to come to Houston. Edge rusher Danielle Hunter, arguably the Texans' biggest signing this offseason, knows why he wanted to play in Houston.

"It's an honor to be able to come back and play in front of my family and all the people that I grew up with," the Houston native Hunter said on Thursday. "I know they've been pretty excited about the news lately, and it'll be fun to be able to come to a game and see me play."

Okay, sure, the fact it's his hometown was a huge reason why Hunter wanted to play for the Texans. But, there are other reasons, too, like the success last year.

“It was a big part of it," Hunter continued. "I remember last year during the playoffs, I actually came to the game against the Browns and I liked what I saw there, and just the home feeling and how the guys were on the field, playing together for each other how they stormed the ball on defense. That was a big part of it, so I'm excited about that.”

But when you really break it all down, the biggest reason is DeMeco Ryans, who used to be a player and is now a player's coach. Guys love that, and it draws players in.

“I like that he understands the players," Hunter said. "He understands players and having them be able to go out there and play for each other as one unit. He brings in the family aspect of playing football. It's not an individual sport. You've got to go out there and play for each other. That's one of the biggest parts about it, and he understands his players, what we need and what we want in order to be successful.”

Ryans is building something special in Houston. And, it will only get better, and more players will want to play in Houston.
