The Houston Texans are an organization all about class. You have to represent the culture they are building, and you have to do it in the best way possible. There is no other way, and it's been shown to work since being under the second-year head coach at DeMeco Ryans.
When you look at some of the signings they have recently made, they are all guys who play with the same edge and passion the Texans do. They are also classy guys who you won't often hear about off the field unless it's about doing some good for the Houston community, which seems to be very often in that case.
One of the best and biggest signings the Texans made in free agency was bringing in edge rusher Danielle Hunter. This was huge when you consider they had just lost Jonathan Greenard to the Minnesota Vikings. However, the Hunter signing was different for a few reasons.
He is a classy guy, and he showed that when asked if he would wear the same number he wore in Minnesota, 99.
"Man, 99, that's JJ's number," Hunter said at his introductory press conference. "He's done a lot with that number. I'm not even going to mess with it. To be able to do what he's done with that number for the community and the Texans, I'm just leaving that under him. I decided to possibly go with the number 55."
First, that message means even more when you consider that Hunter is from the Houston area and somewhat grew up a Texans fan and a fan of J.J. Watt. And he is right; Watt is one of the greatest defensive players of all time and is easily the greatest Houston Texans of all time. Wearing his number would come as a sign of disrespect to many, and Hunter probably doesn't want to try and live up to those expectations anyway.
The way he approached the question was fantastic, though. It shows that he is locked into what Watt means to the Texans and the community, and he doesn't want to mess that up. Maybe one day, we will have the same conversation about No. 55 on the Texans, the bumper that Hunter will likely switch to.
Houston Texans finally make splash move by agreeing to terms with edge rusher Danielle Hunter
The Texans are looking good for 2024.
