One play from 2022 college football season shows why Texans' draft decision should be easy
The Houston Texans have a big decision to make when it comes to the 2023 NFL Draft, but it should be an easy one
The Houston Texans have the No. 2 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft andthey needf a quarterback.
Pretty good spot to be in, right?
The only problem for Houston is that the Chicago Bears have the No. 1 pick in the draft. And they'll almost certainly be trading that pick.
If Houston wants the first shot at drafting a quarterback, they need to be the team that strikes a deal with the Bears for the No. 1 pick.
But before they get to that point, they have to decide who they want to select with the No. 1 pick and whether or not trading up is worth it.
And I think the answer is obvious.
Alabama's Bryce Young is the best quarterback in this draft. I don't care about the fact that he's 5-foot-10. And it doesn't matter that his playing weight will likely be around 195 lbs (NFL rules protect the quarterback more today than they ever have…smaller quarterbacks aren't the risk they once were).
Young is dynamic. He's the best playmaker in the class. If Kyler Murray went No. 1 in 2019, then Young should certainly go No. 1 in 2023. Young is easily the better player.
A player that goes No. 1 overall needs to have the intangibles that take their game to the next level. That's what makes Joe Burrow so good. And it's what made Tom Brady so good, too. Burrow and Brady possess the height that Young doesn't, but their height isn't what makes them good. It's their ability to lead, improvise when things go south, and inspire confidence among their teammates.
Young has those traits. And he's pretty special on the field, too.
Just look at this throw from Young last year during Alabama's loss to Tennessee.
That's a special play. Vols pass rusher Byron Young quickly beats Alabama's pulling guard. Bryce Young recognizes that pressure is on the way and instead of taking off running or throwing the ball away, the Bama quarterback keeps his eyes downfield and delivers a perfect strike to tight end Cameron Latu.
It's hard to see in this still image from the play, but look at where the defender was positioned near Latu when Young threw the pass (far right of the photo).

That's the definition of throwing someone open. Not only did Young make a perfect throw while on the move (the ball didn't sail or lead the tight end out of bounds), but he had the confidence to fit the ball into a tiny window just out of the defender's reach.
Everything about that play screams starting NFL quarterback to me.
I'm not about to predict that Young will be a perennial Pro Bowler in the NFL, but he has the talent and intelligence to play at that level. And the special things that he's able to do on the field — like the Mahomes-esque throw above — make him more than worthy of being the first pick in the draft.
If the Texans want to land a difference-maker at quarterback, they'll work out a deal with the Bears to ensure they get the best player in the draft.
