Updated look at the Houston Texans' 2023 draft picks
The Texans have a great shot at adding some core pieces for the future
The Houston Texans are in dire need of help after a 3-13-1 season that resulted in the firing of former head coach Lovie Smith.
Well, fortunately, they are in a good spot to bring in the much-needed assistance. Last year's failures, along with the Cleveland Browns' own failures and a litany of trades have left the team with 12 total picks heading into the 2023 NFL Draft.
But what makes the haul even better is the fact that two of said selections are top-12 picks and overall, the Texans have five picks in the top-104 selections.
Here is the full slate of Houston's picks as things currently stand:
- Round 1, Pick 2 overall
- Round 1, Pick 12 overall (from CLE)
- Round 2, Pick 33 overall
- Round 3, Pick 65 overall
- Round 3, Pick 73 overall (from CLE)
- Round 4, Pick 104 overall
- Round 5, Pick 138 overall
- Round 6, Pick 188 overall
- Round 6, Pick 201 overall (from NYG)
- Round 6, Pick 203 overall (from MIN)
- Round 6, Pick 207 overall (from SF)
- Round 7, Pick 239 overall
The Texans are not expected to receive any compensatory picks, per Over The Cap.
The extra first- and third-rounders are from the Deshaun Watson trade, obviously. Pick No. 201 is from a 2021 trade that involved former Texans cornerback Keion Crossen going to the New York Giants in return for the pick.
Pick No. 203 comes from last year's decision to trade defensive lineman Ross Blacklock and a 2023 seventh-rounder to the Minnesota Vikings for a 2023 sixth-rounder. Pick No. 207 also comes from a 2021 trade that saw the Texans trade pass rusher Charles Omenihu to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2023 sixth-round pick.
This is obviously a very crucial draft for first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans. Fortunately for him, he is set up very well when it comes to both the draft and free agency, as the Texans currently have the fifth-most cap space ($37,612,053), per Over The Cap.
