Houston Texans’ biggest offseason move comes full circle after trading WR John Metchie III to the Eagles
A nice deal for Houston.
The Texans made several trades during the offseason, and have now made one following their second preseason game.
Houston has traded wide receiver John Metchie III and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round draft pick.
The 2026 fifth-round pick originally belonged to the Texans before they traded for safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. That trade has now essentially become Metchie and offensive guard Kenyon Green for Gardner-Johnson and Bryant.
Metchie has shown flashes of potential during his three-year NFL career, but has gotten lost in the shuffle on Houston’s WR depth chart. In Saturday’s preseason game against the Carolina Panthers he recorded just one reception for eight yards.
The Texans have impressive depth at WR with Nico Collins, Christian Kirk, Jayden Higgins, and Jaylin Noel leading the way. Parting ways with Metchie is a logical decision not only for Houston, but also for Metchie – who is still just 25 years old.
A second-round pick by the Texans in 2022, Metchie has recorded 40 catches for 412 yards and one touchdown during his time with the team. Enter veteran TE Harrison Bryant, who was a fourth-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2020. With Brevin Jordan tearing his ACL this past week, Houston needed depth at the position.
Bryant has posted 89 receptions for 791 yards and 10 TDs throughout as he enters his sixth NFL season. He may not crack the Texans’ 53-man roster, but could be a practice squad candidate. If Bryant does manage to make the main roster, he’ll contribute as a blocker and could be an under-the-radar redzone threat.
