Demeco Ryans has found a defensive assistant for his inaugural coaching staff.

Per reports, Rod Wright is leaving his post at Miami to join the staff of Ryans. Wright will reportedly be a defensive line assistant. The defensive line coach for the Texans is Jacques Cesaire, who was retained by Ryans for the 2023 season.

Wright has strong Houston ties. The 38-year-old was born in Houston and starred for Hastings High. Wright then played his college ball at the University of Texas where he was a Consensus All-American in 2005. While at Texas, Wright was college teammates with 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan.

After an impressive collegiate year, Wright was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 2006 NFL Draft. Wright bounced around the NFL until he entered the coaching ranks in 2010. Wright got his coaching start at his alma mater, Texas, as a defensive special assistant.

Wright then spent four seasons as the defensive line coach for Sam Houston State. That stretch was followed by one season at East Carolina before Wright joined UTSA in 2019. Before the 2022 season, Wright was hired by Mario Cristobal at the University of Miami.

At Miami, Wright was in charge of an impressive defensive line group that included 4-star Nyjalik Kelly. At the time of his hiring, Wright was praised by Cristobal as a "game-changer."

Additionally, Wright had Bill Walsh Diversity coaching fellowships with the 49ers and Seahawks. Wright replaces Kenyon Jackson, who was not retained by Ryans.
